Lots of coastal places or islands in Croatia have their very own special indigenous dessert, mostly a cake. But none of them can track its history all the way back to 1177! In that year, says the legend, the recipe for Rab cake was created and it was served to the visiting Pope. He obviously liked it since Rabska torta has survived to this day. And if it was good enough for the Pope, it’s good for everyone. With many thanks to Benedictine nuns who managed to save this historic recipe.

The ingredients are seemingly modest – almonds, lemon juice, lemon zest, Maraschino liqueur, apart from the usual ones like sugar and eggs. But combined in this delicious handicraft, they make the formula for something truly special and addictive.

Vilma bakery decided to put Rabska cake back on the scene and do it with style. From humble beginnings, now they also own a deli store in the centre of Rab (also offering many other traditional desserts and goodies), and their Rab cakes, which come in several sizes, can be found in specialized shops and at various fairs all over Croatia. Very memorable souvenir, even if you haven’t been to the island of Rab at all!
