In the center of Osijek, among boring pizzerias, kebabs and sandwich bars, a small diner based on seasonal food from local family farm opened its door. Cheerful, modest and a bit shy owner/chef Magdalena Videković welcomed us all with a big smile and positive “stage fright”.
We had a chance to taste chicken pâté and homemade bread with sesame and thyme, vegetable and fruit shake, vegetable soup and tortillas with spicy pork. Focus is on local and fresh ingredients. All desserts are based on grits, which is definitely grandma-style, but maybe some cake would really fit well. Wine we tasted was from Erdut, but I think it’s something that needs improvement.
One thing is interesting – all food is available in vegan version. Our conclusion is that Stara Magda is good value for Osijek’s restaurant scene, and we’ll closely watch the progress and growth of this small and warm “feel-like-home” place.
