Between the two roads that lead to Erdut, on Dalj planina, lies a small organic apple orchard of Mihaljević family planted in 2012. At the moment they have about 3 hectares and next year, after three years of transiton period, they are hoping to get organic certificate.
This year they decided to produce apple juice and jam despite the weather troubles that hit all country. Through EU project of association Slap (Waterfall) they got free visual identity, labels and package design. Alma said: „That’s the point when I realized that things are getting more serious. At fairs people approached us and said some very nice things about flavor and design of our juice. At that moment I knew we’re on the right track.“
While I was drinking their juice, Alma told me they wanted to respect tradition of their
ancestors and create juice without artificial coloring, flavors and preservatives, to be able to offer it to their children and taste the flavor of their own childhood. And that is something what I also felt: pure old fashion grandma’s juice.
When I asked her about organic production she said: „When you enter into the organic
production, you must break all barriers inside your head. Every ladybug, every bee and every animal that lives in orchard now begins to be important.“ and she continues: „Because, when you think organic, you think about the Earth. I’m satisfied and I feel so good!“
„Our plan is to expand as we can and try to get some money for small production unit from
EU funds.“ Their plan is really simple – small home production of jam and compote without big fancy machines. Alma said that they „kill“ true essence of fruti preserves.
