The amazing island of Brač, a world for itself, is famous for its lamb and goat meat, among other things. An island institution, Konoba (tavern) Kopačina delivers it any way you want. You can’t miss with lamb peka-style (baked slowly in open fire under an iron or clay bell), but be adventurous and go for “janjetina na špicu” (big lamb shish kebabs with herbs) or the ancient “vitalac” (grilled lamb offal), dating back to Greek times.

Villa Spiza is as unpretentious as it gets, but the food (spiza in Dalmatian dialect) they offer is deeply rooted in city of Split family tradition. The menu is handwritten on a piece of paper, and the dishes are based on season aka offer on the local farmers market Pazar. We've tried fried shark, lamb steaks and artichokes with peas, as classical as possible. BUT, the desert (semifreddo) was tastegasmic! You would get this kind of cooking at a table of a middle class Split family.

A hearty meal in a warm setting, overlooking the Zagorje hills. Sounds good? Then ignore the bizarre stuffed fox pointing a shotgun at you at the entrance, come in and try the best cottage cheese and cream in your life, followed by tender game in juicy sauces and the unavoidable range of poultry with mlinci. They just wouldn't tell me where they get the cheese. Utter frustration.

As the friendly but unintrusive service ushers you onto the beautiful terrace of this "cove-restaurant", you will feel helpless before what they have to offer - fresh and affordable fish and bizarrely red Hvar wine. Once you round things up with the complimentary rakija, you'll either be ready for a quick hazardous swim on the nearby beach or a food coma. We missed the famous gregada, so there's another reason to come back.

The nicely set Konoba Gego quite simply faded in comparison with the nearby Mala Milna restaurant. The octopus salad wasn't exactly substantial and the fish was dry - not what you would expect from a small Dalmatian eatery. To top it all off, the staff was inattentive until it came to paying the bill - they made sure to check it twice and charge two additional pieces of bread. The location somewhat makes up for it all, but the feel just wasn't authentic. I hope things have changed since last year, though.

This family-run restaurant (also winery and boutique hotel) on the island of Pag is settled on a hill, in the middle of a dense pine tree forest, on the margin of a vineyard and an olive-grove. Their winery has been the backbone of the family’s way of life and we could write a lot about their fantastic red (Bordeaux blend), but this is about their culinary philosophy. Their seasonal menus and signature dishes are made to thrill you with tastes and the tradition of Pag, because that is where their inspiration and most of the ingredients come from. The sensations of their ambitious cooking are both traditional and modern, definitely worth its high price. The special atmosphere of the hotel itself and its peaceful surroundings will make it a place you will want to come back to!
